Liverpool-Manchester City match result and reaction: The 2022 Community Shield won by the Reds and Nunez scored on his debut

In the summer, Darwin Nunez scored a goal to lead Liverpool to beat Premier League champions Manchester City 3-1 to win the FA Shield at King Power Stadium on Saturday.

The Uruguayan, who was acquired from Benfica for an initial fee of €75m, made himself an instant fan favorite after coming off the bench with a stoppage-time goal to claim his first cup of the season.

Despite the lack of Nunez in the first half, Liverpool sped up the attack, with Trent Alexander-Arnold opening the scoring in the 21st minute. His first kick led to a slight deviation from Nathan Ake's header and she landed on the post.

City's Erling Haaland started his second game since signing for Pep Guardiola's side, refusing two equalizing chances shortly before the break.

Jurgen Klopp brought new player Nunez off the bench for an hour, and Liverpool continued to look dangerous going forward, with City wanting an equaliser.

And while all eyes were on Haaland, it was another summer signing - Julian Alvarez - who tied the match in the 70th minute.

The Argentine striker hit a shot at Adrian after a stampede in the goal that led to Phil Foden winning the ball from the Spanish goalkeeper. Alvarez's goal was initially ruled out because his original run at the back was considered offside, but an extended VAR check ended with Craig Pawson overturning the decision.

But the goal did not keep City on the same level for long. Nunez withdrew a handball from Ruben Dias in the penalty area which was eventually awarded by the VAR as a penalty. Mohamed Salah sent the penalty kick easily.

Victory was assured for Klopp's side in extra time - Nunez scored his goal. He nodded past Ederson to give Liverpool two goals and ensure a perfect start to his tenure at Anfield.

"Our season started today, and it was important for us to start on the right foot," said Alexander-Arnold, who praised the 23-year-old's impact.

"He won the penalty kick, scored a goal and looked very energetic," he said. "He was brought in to score goals and he proved that he can do it today."

"He is a great player, a young player who wants to learn. He is well connected with the boys. He came with a point to prove."
